How IP Ratings Defined?

Edited by Anne.

The Ingress Protection(IP) Code outlines a system of classifying for the protection of electrical enclosures against the intrusion of foreign matters(dust…) and moisture, which is officially designed as IEC 60529 and was specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

The first number of IP code refers to the degree of protection against contact with moving parts and against solid foreign matters intruding into an enclosure.

0 means no protection supported.

1 means protection supported against entry of objects larger than 50 square mm.

2 means protection supported against entry of objects larger than 12 square mm.

3 means protection supported against entry of objects larger than 2.5 square mm.

4 means protection supported against entry of objects larger than 1.0 square mm.

5 means protection supported against entry of sufficient quantity of dust to prevent satisfactory operation.

6 means complete protection supported against entry of dust.

The second number of IP code refers to degree of protection against the harmful entry of various forms of moisture( water drop, spray, submersion etc.)

0 means no protection supported.

1 means protection supported against the vertical falling of water drops.

2 means protection supported against the vertical falling of water drops when the light assembly is titled up to 15 degrees from its normal position.

3 means protection supported against the entry of water spray from angel of up to 60 degrees from vertical.

4 means protection supported against the entry of water splashes or spray from any direction.

5 mean protection supported against of a low pressure jet of water in any direction.

6 mans protection supported against the heavy seas and a strong jet of water in any direction.

7 means protection supported against water immersion up to 1 meter.

8 means protection supported against submersion over 1 meter.

For example, IP68 indicates complete protection against entry of water when submersed in over 1 meter of water.

IP69K rating indicates the protection against ingress of dust and high temperature, high pressure water making the products with such certificate enable for using under conditions where carefully sanitized needed. However it doesn’t means protection against entry of submersion of water included, instead, it provides protection against water pressure from steam-jet cleaning.

To bear the IP69K rating, products must go through rigorous procedures to test protection against penetration of water with high pressure, high temperature and dust.
